The History of the Building
A venue of unparalleled uniqueness, the building named "The Old Grammar School" is a living testament to centuries of history. Stepping into this 600-year-old property, you are enveloped in the warmth and character of what was once a thriving village school.
Constructed in 1586 to replace Thomas Langley's Parish school, established in 1412, this charming property bore the title 'Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School.' Queen Elizabeth I herself granted it letters of patent, marking its origin as a church school. Initially founded to offer 'free and perpetual' education in the Parish of Middleton, it has since transformed into the town's most graceful wedding reception venue—a truly enchanting setting to commemorate your special day.
In 1909, the Old Grammar School closed its doors as a school. Subsequently, it became a hub for charitable endeavors, hosting Sunday school sessions, mission services, and outreach activities, often overseen by a Church Army Sister or Captain. During the 1960s, the venue found a new purpose as it was leased to the Middleton Operatic and Dramatic Society. The culmination of its diverse history occurred in 1997 when the Old Grammar School underwent extensive restoration, restoring it to the splendid standard you witness today—gratitude extended to the National Heritage Lottery Board and English Heritage for generously funding its refurbishment.
